Your Brain Will Thank You For It

Why your nervous system might be as hungry as your body

I promised you this one.

At the end of the mustard post I wrote something like "your brain — for reasons we will talk about in an upcoming Journal edition — will thank you for it." So here we are. Reasons, as promised.

I want to pick up from where that post left off — not the belonging anxiety part, which I've had time to feel sufficiently embarrassed about — but the other thing. The observation I keep returning to. That the conversations that afternoon didn't happen in spite of the meal. They happened because of it.

Five women, a long table, food arriving in unhurried stages, nowhere to be. And something about that arrangement made it easier to tell the truth.

I don't think that's coincidental.

Hormones Set the Scene (But They're Not the Whole Play)

Let's start with the obvious part, because it's genuinely important and still underexplained.

Estrogen and progesterone are not just reproductive hormones. Estrogen influences serotonin production, dopamine signalling, memory, mood regulation, sleep quality, stress resilience, and the way your brain metabolises glucose. Progesterone has a calming effect on the nervous system through its interaction with GABA receptors — which is why some women describe feeling suddenly anxious or wired when it declines. Not dramatic. Just… off.

So when these hormones start shifting in perimenopause and beyond, the experience is rarely confined to hot flushes and irregular cycles. It tends to show up as anxiety that appears from nowhere, stress tolerance that's quietly halved, a low-grade cognitive fuzziness that’s surprisingly hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t experienced it, disrupted sleep, motivation that's gone oddly quiet, and an emotional volatility you can't quite account for and weren't expecting.

Women are frequently encouraged to interpret these symptoms psychologically. As poor resilience, or burnout, or the need to meditate more.

Sometimes those things are true. But the brain is biological. And biology responds to inputs.


What You Feed Your Brain Matters (Without Becoming Religious About It)

Here's where I want to be careful, because this is territory wellness culture has thoroughly colonised and done significant damage to.

Food is not medicine in the magical internet sense. A salmon fillet will not dissolve existential dread. Switching to sourdough bread will not recalibrate your nervous system.

But nutrition does matter — not as a personality project, but as a fairly basic biological reality. Neurotransmitters are built from nutrients. Blood sugar stability changes how the brain experiences stress. Protein supports cognition as much as it supports muscle. And midlife is often the exact stage where women start under-eating across the board.

Not intentionally, but structurally.

The years get crowded. Meals get skipped or replaced with grazing whilst you become extremely competent at feeding everyone around you. Appetite disappears under stress, or you've spent so many years trying to stay small that eating enough protein starts to feel oddly excessive — like you're doing something wrong.

Coffee is not breakfast. Crackers are not lunch. And your brain cannot run on approximately half a chicken breast and nervous system chaos.

When blood sugar swings, the body responds with cortisol and adrenaline — which produce symptoms that feel remarkably like perimenopause itself. Anxiety, irritability, sudden fatigue, poor concentration. For women already navigating hormonal fluctuation, the amplification is not trivial.

Your brain prefers steadiness. Not perfection. Not a clean eating protocol. Just — steadiness.

Which is perhaps why sitting at a table for three unhurried hours with other women can feel oddly restorative — even when nobody says anything particularly profound.


The Nervous System Eats Too

Here's the part that doesn't make it into nutrition content very often.

You can eat the right things and still not get the full benefit if you're eating them standing at the kitchen bench, in four minutes, while mentally running through everything that needs to happen before 3pm.

Chronic stress changes digestion, absorption, blood sugar regulation, inflammation, and hormone signalling. A body in stress or threat mode doesn’t process food the same way as a body that feels genuinely at rest.

Midlife women are often carrying invisible cognitive and emotional loads — aging parents, teenagers, relationship shifts, financial pressure, career reinvention, the sheer administrative weight of holding an entire family ecosystem together.

Sometimes the most important thing a meal provides is not protein or omega-3.

It's interruption.

A pause. A table. A moment where your nervous system receives evidence that life is not currently on fire. That evidence, delivered consistently, is not nothing — it is doing more than we give credit for.

Which brings me back to that afternoon. Five women, none of whom had it sorted. All of them somewhere in the middle. The food giving us something to do with our hands while we said the things we hadn't quite said out loud yet.

The long lunch was doing more than I realised. It slowed us down. It gave the nervous system somewhere to land. It gave the brain the steady fuel and the unhurried company it needed to stop running its background threat assessment and just — be there.

The meal wasn’t background to the conversation.
It was part of the reason it happened at all.
